Nikki, Master’s Level Intern

Nikki Burks is a counseling intern in her final year of the Master of Arts in Counseling program at Regis University. Before pursuing counseling, Nikki has worked with children for over twelve years as both an elementary and special education teacher. Her background in education gives her a deep understanding of child development, learning differences, and the unique challenges students face at school and home.
Nikki utilizes a variety of play therapy approaches to help children express themselves, build connection, and process experiences that may be difficult to put into words. She believes play is a natural language for children — a powerful way to support healing, growth, and resilience, especially for those impacted by attachment wounds or trauma.
In addition to her work with children, Nikki is passionate about supporting adolescents and teens as they navigate challenges such as anxiety, depression, identity development, and life transitions. Her warm, collaborative approach helps young people feel seen, supported, and empowered to discover their strengths and inner capacity for change.
Nikki also recognizes that parents and caregivers play an essential role in the therapeutic process and partners closely with families to foster stronger relationships and promote emotional well-being.
