Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a wonderful alternative to traditional talk therapy. At CAC Denver we work out of a relational equine therapy model. We believe EAP provides a way to help people grow, learn, change, and heal through engaging in relationship with the horse. We also use a Trauma Focused Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (TF-EAP) model. This model was established through the study of neuroscience, where the link between stressful life events and our ability to develop healthy relationships was discovered. The foundation of this method is based on the discovery that we heal in relationship. TF-EAP is best used in treating trauma and stressful life events, but also benefits those dealing with grief, anxiety, depression, and other social and or emotional problems.
Horses are wonderful partners in therapy because they are relational by nature. TF-EAP utilizes the relationship of client and horse as a starting point for gaining insight into the emotional, behavioral, and relational challenges and strengths of the client. In this relationship, the client is empowered to take responsibility for their relationships and gain a greater understanding of their responsibilities in relationship.
